About This Site
Molecular Thinking is the brainchild of yours truly, Edward Cruz. I'm a developer of web applications and other enterprise systems, but I also do projects for small business, non-profits and sometimes just for myself when I can. This is one such project.
The original idea for Molecular Thinking came to me one day when the architect of the project I was working on at the time was trying to come up with a name for a new consulting methodology. I couldn't think of anything of the top of my head, but I had something I wanted to try...
I tore up a blank 8.5 x 11 piece of paper, handed the pieces to all of my teammates, and asked them to write down words that they thought were related to the task at hand, or just whatever they wanted if they couldn't think of anything. Then I took them, put them in my baseball cap, and mixed them up.
Next, I held out my cap to the architect, asked him to take out two pieces of paper at a time and read what he took out to everyone. At first, nothing really useful came of it. But after a few more tries, he picked out these two words:
"Simple" and "Fly"
We all kind of laughed ("Super Fly - The New Methodology"), but then he started saying the words together again, and in one of those "eureka!" moments, he had the name for the new methodology: Simplify.
Since then, I've always had a styrofoam cup or tea cup on my desk at work to serve as an impromptu "molecular thinking" machine that I and my co-workers can use to brainstorm. Many interesting and useful ideas have come from the free association of the words, concepts, and phrases that my friends and I have put it and then taken out again...
And now, everyone has one on their own desk, in their browser, here at Molecular Thinking. I hope you enjoy using it.
